During this period of great social change, England and Wales had just emerged from the First World War, a global pandemic, and vast unemployment. Were your ancestors embracing the roaring 20s, or just managing to put food on the table? The 1921 Census can help you find out.

Digitised in partnership with The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics, the work took three years to complete, and preserved some of the nation’s history for all time. The Census can be accessed online on FindMyPast (with a Premium subscription or with micropayments), or for free from one of three regional hubs at the UK National Archives, Manchester Central Library and the National Library of Wales.

Jessamy Carlson, Family History specialist at The National Archives, said: 'The release of a census always provides a wealth of research potential, and the 1921 Census is no different. We’ve really enjoyed hearing accounts of what people have found about people and places so far. There’s still so much to discover from a pivotal time between the wars, when communities were recovering from a great influenza pandemic and embarking on a new era where everyday rights and roles were changing.'
