Eleven towns and cities around the UK will help to mark the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage to America, one of the most important journeys in history.

Mayflower 400 is a dedicated programme which, on the run up to 2020, will organise events to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower ship to America - an estimated 200 million US citizens are descended from the inhabitants of this one ship.

PR team Hills Balfour will highlight the key elements of the Mayflower story in the lead up to the ship departing the city of Plymouth’s shores for the New World on 16 September 1620. The team will work closely with a network of local, national and international partners, as well as VisitBritain and UKInbound, to launch the Mayflower 400 campaign in the US, Holland and the UK with a particular focus on travel trade media, to thereby educate the industry and capitalise on the tourism opportunities the 400th anniversary generates.

The 11 UK member destinations within the Mayflower 400 programme are:
  • Austerfield, Doncaster
  • Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Dartmouth, Devon
  • Gainsborough, Lincolnshire
  • Harwich, Essex
  • Immingham, Lincolnshire
  • Plymouth, Devon
  • Scrooby & Babworth, Nottinghamshire
  • Southwark, London
  • Southampton, Hampshire
  • Worcestershire

Emma Tatlow, National Visitor Project Manager for Mayflower 400, said, ‘We are thrilled to be working with Hills Balfour and feel their experience and expertise in both international and UK destination PR will help us put the Mayflower story on the map on both a national and international scale.

'The Mayflower 400 commemorations will highlight the special relationship between our nations, transform communities, provide cultural, educational, business and visitor links and celebrate the people and places of this epic pioneering tale. We therefore look forward to working with Hills Balfour to communicate Mayflower 400’s core brand messages in order to raise the profile of the campaign and increase the value and volume of the visitor economy across the destinations.'
