A campaign has been launched inviting members of the public to donate £1 to help buy two rare photographs relating to the Mafeking Seaside Fund.

Sheffield City Archives & Local Studies Library is asking for donations to raise £149 to purchase the photographs, which are currently on sale on eBay.

The photos show crowds around a Boer war cannon on Sheffield's Leopold Street in c.1900. If purchased, they would be scanned and added to the Picture Sheffield website for everyone interested in Sheffield’s history to enjoy.

Over 400 Sheffielders died in the Boer War. Their names are listed on memorials in the entrance to the Town Hall and in Weston Park. The war is also remembered in local street names such as Ladysmith Avenue and Mafeking Place and also in the Spion Kops at both of Sheffield’s football grounds.
