How to teach local history in schools
Prof Geoff Timmins will be speaking on ‘Local history teaching in schools: supporting active learning approaches’ at Family Tree Live
Introducing Claire Moores’ talk:
From investigative activities to hands-on research projects, Prof Geoff Timmins’ has many practical ideas for teachers (and parents and grandparents) to use to give their children the chance to gain new skills and learn about history – both indoors and out and about in their local area.
Prof Geoff Timmins will draw on the types of documentary and non-documentary sources that are available nationwide for the study of local history. He will, in particular, focus on the investigative activities that children can undertake relating to family life in the past. For instance, he will show ways that they can gather oral testimony from family members, and will reveal the insights they can gain by counting chimney pots, or by studying changes in forename popularity. He will also examine the key skills that children can acquire from these activities, including numeracy applications.
The talk will complement Dr Gill Draper‘s contribution (10.45am on Saturday 27 April) by considering differing types of local history activities that children at primary and secondary levels can undertake.
This talk is for you if you are keen to encourage children to learn about the history of the place in which they live and sow an enthusiasm for historical research among the future generations.
Suitable for many levels of family history experience, beginner to intermediate.
