Find out how to make the most of the Master Search feature on TheGenealogist genealogy website and find your ancestors faster.

TheGenealogist website has millions of records for its subscribers to explore and one of the most useful is Master Search, which covers all the different categories which the site offers and allows users to search across all record sets simultaneously.

Here are three expert tips from TheGenealogist on making the most of this tool:

1. Looking for a family

Select the “Search for A Family” from the dropdown menu on the Master Search. This will allow you to use the forenames of the family to refine right down to the correct group of people.

2. Use keywords to narrow down the search

You can add some keywords to help with your search. Use anything that you already know about the ancestor to narrow down your search to the person that you are looking for. This could be an area in which they lived, or an occupation that you know that your ancestor pursued. Alternatively it could be a birthplace, an age, or anything else that could have been written down on the record.

3. Find an address option

A third way, that TheGenealogist’s Master Search can be used to discover your ancestors, is by selecting: Find an address. This is an option that few other websites offer and can be really useful to locate a residence in the census or to track a household through time.

If a person seems to have disappeared from the decennial census, from one count to the next, then it could be worth your while checking the address that they last were recorded in to see if they are still there.
