Who is the DNA Bootcamp for?

The Bootcamp is designed for beginner to intermediate family historians, but may also be helpful to more advanced researchers. If you're using DNA for your family history research, or you are thinking about taking a test, then the Bootcamp will help you.

If you have not yet taken a DNA test, we recommend taking a test in time to receive your results for the start of the course (4 September).

What will I learn on the Bootcamp?

Over eight sessions, the course covers the following topics:

How to interpret your results, from centimorgans to ethnicity estimates
Working with your match list, including clustering and shared matches
Keeping organised DNA research notes
Using DNA to confirm family lines and solve mysteries
Building trees for matches and identifying common ancestors
Best practices for ethical and responsible DNA research

Who is running the course?

The DNA Bootcamp is brought to you by the team at Family Tree, and presented by Michelle Leonard of Genes & Genealogy.

The Bootcamp has been a popular annual event on the Family Tree schedule since 2021, and has seen hundreds of family historians learn how to use their DNA results more effectively.

Michelle specialises in solving adoption and all manner of unknown ancestor mysteries using DNA but also undertakes traditional genealogical research, living-relative tracing, historical and television research, tutoring, webinars and speaking engagements.

She is a regular speaker at major international genealogy events and is also one of the co-authors of Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA: A Guide For Family Historians, and author of The DNA Bootcamp Workbook, which accompanies this course.
