Family Tree is proud to announce the winners of its 'Websites of the Decade' award, as voted for by Family Tree readers.
Annabel Reeves, the UK PR Manager for Ancestry.co.uk was presented with a certificate and trophy.
The presentations were made at Who Do You Think You Are? LIVE at Olympia on Saturday 26th February: First place was Ancestry.co.uk, second place UKBMD.org.uk and third place FreeBMD.org.uk.
1st place
The Ancestry website has a wide and full range of family history sources, which have helped to revolutionise the hobby for family historians.
2nd place
Provides over 1,834 links to websites with UK BMD resources. Some are links to free sites, some are to paid-for sites. UKBMD is useful for links to local register office index information – so avoiding the transcription errors that could creep in when the records were sent to the GRO. Ian Hartas, founder of UKBMD was presented with a certificate.
3rd place
This site offers excellent transcriptions for BMD records for England and Wales, providing free records to people just starting their family history, as well as long-standing researchers.
Camilla von Massenbach, trustee and project founder of FreeBMD received a certificate.
It was great to see the projects of both major commerical enterprises such as Ancestry and the dedication and efforts of valuable volunteer sites such as UKBMD and FreeBMD recognised by Family Tree readers.
It's sites such as these that have transformed the hobby of family history, making new ways to search the historical records that we love to use quicker and easier.
