Michael Tobias will be speaking on ‘Researching your Jewish ancestors’ at Family Tree Live

 

Introducing Michael Tobias’s talk:

How to trace your Jewish branches in the UK and Europe.  Sources and techniques will be discussed as well as some of the difficulties encountered.

Michael Tobias’s lecture will cover the main sources of material that can be used to research Jewish families in the UK. Special emphasis will be given to records specific to Jewish research, but in addition the talk will also look at other resources of more general interest to immigrant families.

Some guidance will be given on extending your research into countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Holocaust materials. The special challenges and research skills required in respect of Jewish naming conventions and border changes will also be considered.

 

This talk is for you if you would like to find out about the sources and skills to help you to trace Jewish family.

Suitable for all levels of family history experience, beginner to intermediate.

Mini bio:

Michael Tobias has a BSc Honours in Mathematics and Physics and qualified as a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries.  In 2012 he completed a Masters Degree in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies at Strathclyde University.  He is a co-founder of Jewish Records Indexing – Poland and former Vice President, Programming of JewishGen, Inc.  He was Database matching consultant to the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims Claims  (ICHEIC).  He has contributed to various Journals, Radio and TV Programmes including “Who Do You Think You Are” both in the UK and USA. He has spoken at several conferences including the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) annual conference since 1996 and was awarded their “Lifetime Achievement” award in Washington 2011.
