Ian Waller will be speaking on ‘Ellis Island - Isle of Hope from Annie Moore and Afterwards’ and ‘The Broken Branch’ at Family Tree Live
Introducing Ian Waller’s Friday talk:
‘Ellis Island - Isle of Hope from Annie Moore and Afterwards’
Annie Moore was the first person to be admitted to the USA through Ellis island. She was a 15-year-old Irish girl travelling alone in the hope of a better life.
In his presentation Ian Waller will look at the value of the records of the Ellis Island Immigration Centre, and he will also discuss what happened to those who migrated – through the eyes of the first person admitted, 15-year-old Annie Moore.
Both Ellis Island and Castle Garden records of immigration exist online and are the go-to resource for people seeking ancestors arriving in America. Ian Waller’s talk will show how to get the best out of these records and where to look for further details of our ancestors as hopeful migrants seeking new lives.
This talk is for you if you wish to learn how to trace ancestors arriving in America.

‘The Broken Branch’
When someone changes a name this causes a challenge for family historians. Discover the reasons and useful tips on how the name change can be revealed with Ian Waller’s advice.
There are many reasons why a change of name occurs and most happen without any legal documentation. In his talk Ian Waller will examine aspects of research such as:
- Spelling variation
- Naming patterns
- Nicknames and alias names
- Transgender naming
- As well as how to find records from newspapers, deed polls, gravestones, Royal licences and newspapers.
This talk will help discover if the change is a clean break or murky mystery.
This talk is for you if you suspect your ancestor changed their name and need to solve the puzzle.
