A wildcard search is a way to widen your search options if you're unable to find an ancestor by using the name by which you know them.
For example, if your search for Elizabeth Wilson born in London in 1822 draws a blank, using the wildcard options on FamilySearch allows you to search for mis-spellings of the name on the millions of records held on the website, including those which may have been indexed incorrectly.
