What a cracking three days at Who Do You Think You Are? Live, NEC, Birmingham, 2017. It was great to see everyone who popped along to the stand. And to find out the latest news from the family history world. Here's a tiny taste of the fun of the fair

What better way to to explore the latest in the way of genealogical goodies and discover the hottest ancestral news than to visit Who Do You Think You Are? Live. Back at the NEC, Birmingham, this April, the show was as interesting as ever.

Our neighbours included the soldiers from MARS - the Military Ancestry Roadshow - and it was intriguing to hear them chat about their kit, explaining the buttons, badges, and more. Did you know that even the word 'chat' is apparently a Tommy invention (from chattels, the Tommy nickname for lice - as you took them with you wherever you went. When the men were sitting, talking in the trenches, they would squash the bugs while passing the time)?

Other inspiring moments were the opportunity to look at one visitor's massive family tree chart - a labour of love 30 years in the making. Another reader's family story of an adventurous female ancestor who became a doctor and married a Tamil back in the 1890s. And some on-the-spot photo analysis by our very own photo-dating expert Jayne Shrimpton happy to help a reader in need.

Also it was fascinating to learn more about the latest in the way of genetic genealogy from Ancestry's genetic communities (only just beta launched). (If you want to learn more about autosomal DNA tests - increasingly handy for cousin matching and for exploring all branches of your genetic inheritance, check out Susan Meates' article in our June issue, on sale 12 May).

And what about Wladimir Carlos Ledochowski's stunning heirloom family tree charts from Vienna? Just beautiful.

It was really fun to catch up with family history friends old and new, so thank you to everyone who popped along to the Family Tree magazine stand to say hello and share your family history news.

Until next year!

If you weren't able to make the show, watch out for our forthcoming June issue for our show round-up, and have a look at the video below.
