Find how to get started in creating your own family tree, following your family back through time.

Have you been inspired by the latest series of Who Do You Think You Are? Find out how to get started in creating your own family tree, following your family back through time with these simple first steps...

1. Begin with yourself

The first step is to write down your date and place of birth. Then do the same for your parents and grandparents if you have this information.

Include marriage and death dates where applicable; these are the core dates which will enable you to work back generation by generation, growing your family tree as you find more ancestors.

2. Ask your relations

Search your home for family history treasures such as old photographs, scrapbooks and birth, marriage & death certificates. Ask your relatives whether they have family pictures and documents which could help with your quest too. Speaking to family members can be so helpful to your research, so if you have the opportunity to ask relatives don't miss the chance to fill in some gaps.

3. Draw up your family tree

Now that you've collected some information it's time to fill in a basic family tree. This can be great fun and rather addictive, as you chart your family back through time. Read our handy guide on what charts are available to buy (at reasonable prices).
