Founded in 1976 by eleven family historians, Devon Family History Society is now one of the UK’s largest family history societies, with more than 3,800 members.
The society has four regional groups – Exeter, Plymouth, North Devon and South Devon – and members stay in touch via monthly meetings, the society’s journal and occasional visits to local archives and historic sites. Members also take part in society projects, often in partnership with local record offices and archives.
The society’s unique feature is its Acorn Club which is open to children of all ages, anywhere in the world, but especially in Devon. The club provides resources to help schools to use family history to enhance their curriculum and club members also take part in treasure hunts and competitions on their own section of the society’s website.
