The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) 2021 Diamond Essay Competition

The IHGS has launched a family history-themed essay competition, in celebration of its Diamond Jubilee.

There are two categories: adult and sixth form students.

Adult entrants

A Story Worth Telling: the biography of a family group you would like to immortalise. This might be spread over two or three generations. Base your research on primary genealogical and historical sources, including any appropriate specialist records, together with family memorabilia. You might consider war-time experiences, emigration and family occupations: a shop, factory or farm. It should include a pedigree. (3,000 Words)

Prize: £100 donation to a charity of your choice and £100 IHGS Voucher

Sixth Form Students: 

Open to any students in years 12 and 13 studying in the UK

Prize: £100 donation to a charity of your choice and £50 Amazon Voucher

Competition judge

The contest will be judged by author, broadcaster and historian Dr Nick Barratt. The winners will be invited to the IHGS Diamond Jubilee celebration on 31 July 2021 in the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral.

The winning and running up essays will be published in the IHGS journal Family History. Closing date: 1 July 2021.
