The first Wimbledon Championships began on 9 July 1877
On this day in history, 1877: The inaugural day of the Wimbledon Championships is held. It’s hard to imagine summer without Wimbledon, and the gentle sound of whack and ‘poink’ of racket and ball on the telly. But it’s only since 1937 that it’s been filmed; prior to that our ancestral tennis fans would have had to listen to the radio or visit in person.
