The American Declaration of Independence was approved, signed, and sent to the printers on 4 July 1776
On this day in history, 1776: After a year of war between the British and the colonists in America, and several summer months of political wrangling, The American Declaration of Independence was finally approved, signed, and sent to the printers. It’s a document that went on to inspire the fight for democracy and equality around the world, and also one that had its own roots back in the Magna Carta of 1215. It’s very likely that our Chartist ancestors would have borne it in mind as they marched for their rights.
