How to use the 1939 Register

Sue Atkins will be speaking on ‘The 1939 Register and NHS numbers’ at Family Tree Live

Introducing Sue Atkins’s talk:

This talk explains the what and why of the 1939 Register and how to search it online. A summary of ID cards and NHS numbers is included along with FAQs on the 1939 Register and the NHS numbers.

The 1939 Register has become the go-to resource for people researching family in the mid-20th century in England and Wales. As well as providing clues for family historians, as a ‘census substitute’, it will also shed light on your family at the start of the Second World War.

In her talk Sue Atkins will cover:

  • The 1939 Registration Books – What they are and why were they created?
  • How to search the 1939 Register on FindMyPast
  • Searching the Registers online
  • How to deal with missing information and errors
  • Frequently Asked Questions and misconceptions
  • The significance of ID Cards/NHS Numbers

This talk is for you if you’re keen to research your family in the mid-20th century. Not only does the 1939 Register enable you to trace family on the brink of war, it also provides ancestors clues that you can follow up in other resources, such as census or electoral registers.

Suitable for many levels of family history researcher, beginner to intermediate.
