True life story: the tale of a tenacious Georgian woman

True life story: the tale of a tenacious Georgian woman

Sue Swalwell will be speaking on ‘Stepping out of the shadows of men – an independent woman in Georgian London’ at Family Tree Live

Introducing Sue Swalwell’s talk:

This talk will reveal the story of Mary Swalwell, a woman who strove to establish her independence in the world of education and books, who ultimately went bankrupt, but whose life has left an imprint in the public records of Georgian England.

Sue Swalwell writes:

The talk is a case study of the research I’ve undertaken to uncover the story of Mary Swalwell. It will describe the piecing together of the paper trail of Mary’s life using resources such as bankruptcy records, insurance records, land records and local history sources. The tale will reveal a bankruptcy that endured for the best part of 20 years, but it will also show that by looking at a wide range of records it has been possible to gain a more holistic perspective of her life beyond that of her status as a bankrupt.
