The Mary Evans Picture Library is looking ahead to the Platinum wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip on 20 November, with a look at photos of the couple from across the decades. Find out what wedding gift is traditionally given on what anniversary.

On 20 November 2017, 91 year-old Queen Elizabeth II and the 96 year-old Duke of Edinburgh will celebrate seventy years of marriage. Their wedding injected some glamour and fairy tale romance into the gloom of post-war Britain, and through the fluctuating fortunes of the House of Windsor, the Duke has been what the Queen described as her strength and stay’ over the past seven decades.

To mark the occasion, staff at the Mary Evans Picture Library have brought together a selection of drawings and photographs which show the Queen and Prince Philip through the many decades of their marriage. The images include magazine covers, press photographs and official photo calls, showing the royal couple and their family.

The selection includes shots from inside the wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey where Princess Elizabeth would be crowned queen in 1953, after the death of her father George VI.
