Katy Barbier-Greenland will be speaking on ‘Inheriting the unexpected - dealing with unforeseen family secret discoveries arising from genealogical research’ at Family Tree Live
Introducing Katy Barbier-Greenland’s talk:
Genealogical research can uncover unexpected and distressing family secrets. That’s no reason not to do it, but it’s as well to be prepared. In her talk Katy Barbier-Greenland will share several family secret discovery stories, reflect upon the impacts she has encountered and offer insights into sensitive responses to help you tread a diplomatic path into the past.
Katy Barbier-Greenland writes:
All families have secrets, and it’s almost inevitable that when we undertake genealogical research, family secrets can emerge.
Discovering family secrets might be wonderful, but can often be confusing, distressing or upsetting. In her talk, Katy will share family secret discovery stories from around the world, collected for her PhD project, ‘Family Secrets, Secret Families’. She’ll also reflect upon ways in which we might prepare for the possibility of discovering our own major family secrets.
Katy will offer practical insights on how you might empathically disclose this information to others, considering how the family secrets we inherit can have implications for our future.
This talk is for you if you’re curious about those family secrets and are looking for ways to handle them better in your family and in your research.
Suitable for all levels of family history researcher, beginner to experienced.

Mini bio:
Katy is from Melbourne and lives in Amsterdam now. She holds undergraduate degrees in social science majoring in psychology and social work with honours, as well as a Master of Information Management with a research specialisation.
Katy is currently undertaking a PhD in sociology, psychology and family history called ‘Family Secrets, Secret Families’.
Her research interests focus on the ways in which identity, secrecy, silences, stigma, taboo, knowledge and power function in and around families.
Over the last fifteen years, Katy has worked in health and social policy and research management, and she currently works as a grant manager for a health and medical education company.
Katy loves dogs, art, secrets, libraries, dancing, and everything French.
