Genealogy website Findmypast has launched a huge initiative to digitise up to 100 million historic Roman Catholic records.

The Catholic Heritage Archive promises to be the most comprehensive online collection of Roman Catholic records for Britain, Ireland and the US. The subscription site says it has developed a close collaboration with the Catholic Church to make the centuries-old records and images available to researchers, most for the first time, and many will be available to researchers for free.

Millions of Irish records were released last year and now Findmypast is putting its plans into action to publish all the historic sacramental registers for England, Scotland and the USA, starting with the English Archdioceses of Birmingham and Westminster, whose records begin in 1657, and registers for the USA’s Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which has records dating back to 1757.

The archive will include baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials, census records and more. Find more details on the Findmypast blog
