Trace your mariner ancestor’s career – from shipping registers to borough records
This webinar will focus on methods of finding out information about the careers of merchant seamen in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Drawing upon his own experience of tracing two ancestors who were merchant sea captains, Dr Nicholas Dixon will explain how it is possible for genealogists to discover a wealth of information in sources such as:
- newspapers
- shipping registers
- borough records
- the records in the National Archives.
The workshop will be hosted on Zoom and begin at 6.30pm GMT on 2 October. It will last 1 hour 30 mins (inclusive of questions time).

About the webinar presenter
Dr Nicholas Dixon is a professional genealogist and house history researcher in London. He studied history at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and was awarded a PhD degree in 2019 for a thesis concerning the Church of England during the early 19th century. He is an external contributor to the History of Parliament project and undertakes research projects for clients. He is also a student member of the Register of Qualified Genealogists.
