How to search The Gazette

The Gazette is the ‘Official Public Record’. You’ll find entries for today’s date, but equally you can search the historic records for details of your family in decades past. You may wish to search 'All Notices'. However, you may also find it helpful to home in on specific categories of notice, and to employ search operators to help you.

On TheGazette.co.uk you will find notices of deceased estates up to today's date. Executors are advised to publicise the estate via The Gazette so that any creditors have a window in which to make a claim before the estate is distributed to the beneficiaries. We have obscured the name and address of the entry in this instance, even though the person is deceased, but out of respect to their relations. On TheGazette.co.uk you would be able to find names and addresses for each person whose estate was publicised however.

Search The Gazette smarter

Here are some tips to help you find the entries of specific interest by refining your search:

• Use the search operators (AND, OR, NOT, “” etc), narrowing the period by date span too.
• Include a Notice Code in your search (https://www.thegazette.co.uk/noticecodes). [For instance, if you include the code 1105 in the notice code field, then your search will only return results found in 'Honours and awards'.]
• Set up a date span to search within.
• Alternatively, you may also like to use the preset parameters for:

World War I (the preset Gazette category for which spans 28 June 1914 to 31 December 1920).

World War II (the preset Gazette category for which spans 2 September 1939 to 2 September 1945).

Tip! Note that these dates go beyond the commonly accepted dates for the First World War and the Second World War, as very often an ancestor’s details, of promotion or mention in despatches, for instance, may be published several months after the event.

Applying a notice code to your search can help you quickly narrow down your search to a specific type of entry in The Gazette.
