Almost 100,000 Isle of Wight cemetery records are now available online, as the Isle of Wight Council launches a new cemetery records website.

The new website holds records for twelve Isle of Wight cemteries, with around 72,000 burial records and burial ground information for each of the cemeteries. The original records will still be kept by Isle of Wight Council, and can be consulted by arrangement, but the digitisation of the records will help ensure that damage to the originals is kept to a minimum.

Councillor John Hobart, Cabinet Member for Environment and Heritage, said: "A huge amount of work has gone into digitising all of this information and I hope residents will find it useful, for example, when researching their family tree.

“It also ensures our archives are preserved for future generations and makes sure that the council reacts to the way that people are now choosing to search for this information."

The online records can be searched via first name, surname, cemetery and year of death.
