The Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical Studies (SIGS) was established in May 2023 to deliver academic excellence through the creation of exciting new courses, events, and research opportunities, to run alongside the University’s long-standing and world-leading postgraduate programme.
Based in the University of Strathclyde, the Institute is in the enviable position of being able to bring together a growing network of academics, individuals, and organisations to share knowledge and build a thriving genealogy community. This collaborative approach is already generating opportunities for the community with the launch of two new initiatives; the SIGS Spotlight Talks and the Advancing Genetic Genealogy Conference.
Scottish research and expertise
The SIGS team of professional genealogists are at the forefront of genealogy research, with the latest research and developments in the field feeding into learning materials on both the degree programme and short courses. Learn more about some of our Scottish research projects:
Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project - The Genealogical Studies Postgraduate Programme launched the Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project in association with the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy.
Battle of Bannockburn Family History Project - The project incorporated the use of genetic genealogy in the research, to help reveal living descendants of combatants in the Battle of Bannockburn.
Scottish Clans and Families - This area of research consists of continuing research on the families focussed on in the Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project plus several other well-known Scottish surnames.
Genealogy online learning for all!
The Institute offers flexible online learning pathways perfectly suited for beginner through to expert, with students benefiting from the wealth of knowledge and expertise of the SIGS tutor team.
Choose from a range of 8-week online classes commencing in January, April, and October each year or take a free online MOOC, allowing you to study anytime, from anywhere in the world.
If you already have an existing interest and experience in genealogy, you can take your research further with our flexible online postgraduate degree in Genealogical Studies. The degree programme provides a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of genealogical research, records, archives, and genetic genealogy – with an emphasis on research within the British Isles with a focus on Scottish research and resources.
