Robert Watmore, Clerk to Board of Guardians, Lambeth Workhouse

Robert Watmore is of interest because he was Clerk to the Board of Guardians of Lambeth Workhouse at the time of a major scandal in 1838.
Robert was born about 1784 but his birthplace is unknown apart from the fact that it was not in the county of Surrey. There had been a Watmore family of […]

Arthur William Whatmore (1867 - 1951) Genealogist and Historian

Arthur William Whatmore was a person  of  outstanding ability. It is strange that so little is known about him and his life. If anyone who lives near Ashby de la Zouch reads this post and are in a position to undertake some researchinto Arthur’s life, I would be most grateful to hear of their findings.

The ancestors of Esther Whatmore (nee Manuel)

In May last year, I met for the first time a Whatmore second cousin. After we had greeted one another, the next thing he said to me was, ‘Look how dark my skin is. Is it true that the ancestors of our great grandmother Esther Whatmore were from Spain or Portugal?’ My cousin was not […]

Abraham Whatmore (1843 - 1913) of Kidderminster

 St John the […]

James and Ann Whatmore at Hampton, Chelmarsh

My father and grandfather had been born, like myself in Sheffield and there was a family tradition that my great grandfather Joseph Whatmore had been brought up in Hampton Loade in Shropshire. We also knew that he […]

William Watmer Rector of Great Comberton

In the seventeenth century it was quite common for a man who was fortunate enough to be appointed as a rector to pay  a curate to look after his parish and go off and do something altogether more agreeable or remunerative. Such a man was William Watmer, Rector of Great Comberton in Worcestershire and as […]

Humphrey Watmore the Elder, Burgess of Bewdley

By the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Watmores were spreading out from Shropshire, looking for new opportunities. Gradually they spread through the neighbouring county of Worcestershire. One of the early migrants was Humphrey Watmore the Elder  who went to Bewdley. Humphrey was the great x 8 grandfather of Sheila Kirk. Sheila has researched and […]
