Looking closely at a mature tree it is easy to identify the individual branches and where each one starts out from the main stem. With a family tree, however, who is to determine what constitutes an individual  branch and   at what point it splits off from the main trunk?  Thinking in terms of family branches does, however,  tend to make geneaology more manageable  and unless there are three or four family historians all independently researching the same family at the same time and all defining family branches differently, the suggestions of the main researcher, providing a clear definition of the branch  is given, will probably be accepted by other family members.

I thought that a list of Whatmore Family branches might be a helpful thing to place on this blog.  New branches are deemed to start when  an individual family member starts a family in an  new location.  e.g. the Neenton branch. The Neenton branch consists of the descendants of the first Whatmore to live there. It does not however, include all Whatmores who may have lived at Neenton at one time or another. The Neenton branch consists of the main family that lived there for some time.  For some branches the name of the earliest known member is given -the branch itself might be substantially older than the dates for this person.
